They chose to protect their own (as Valka even says to Hiccup when they meet) rather than face the prospect of pointless fighting. Valka believed that peace was possible through isolating herself, so it's not too much to imagine that maybe some of those ideals were taken onboard by the Alpha as well. If her very presence near Cloudjumper was enough to make him think she belonged with them, imagine how the Alpha could've reacted to her as well. When Cloudjumper took Valka back to the Sanctuary, her natural instincts at seeing them as gentle and intelligent creatures could've worked wonders. They're causing deliberate destruction, making a Berk a land of 'kill or be killed' which fits what Valka says. After all, in the flashback in Dragon 2, there's nothing about that raid we can see that suggests the dragons are looting food. Since the Vikings were attacking back just as harshly against them, the Alpha may have been using the other dragons in order to eliminate a threat and also to establish itself at the dominant dragon. The events of when Valka was taken could simply have occurred when Cloudjumper and those dragons were the ONLY dragons who were raiding Berk. The Alpha status has to be earned through combat and vigilance and, above all, the protection of the dragons under its command. A lot of specifics about the situation with the dragons aren't explained and could've changed during the gap.Īccording to DreamWorks' official explanation on the nature of the Bewilderbeast and becoming an Alpha, it states that it's not simply something that they are born into. We know that before the events of the first film that Berk had been consistently at war with the dragons for years and years, including the timeframe during which Valka was taken. I don't think it's really too farfetched to come up with some alternate explanations as to why the Alpha's dragons were apparently there during that particular raid. It's simply adding to what's already there, making it more of a revision. I also wouldn't go so far as to call Dragon 2's flashback a 'retcon' because it's not undoing old information to replace it completely. All we know is that there is just a continued conflict with the dragons. It's difficult to get a sense of what happened during the 15 years between when Valka was taken from Berk and the events of the first film because the film never explains it in any amount of detail.
